Lines, Segments, Rays, and Angles SPLAT: I HAVE THAT!

Here is a series of games for you to add to your files as you prepare for the new school year!

I created the Splat: I Have That series a few years ago when I was looking for an interesting game to play in my class with my students. I needed to create a game that was engaging and easy to follow. Also, I wanted to create something new that could be played the same way, even if the focus skill was different. Anytime I play a SPLAT game in my class it is guaranteed to get loud! The students love it and we can never play this game just once. I am really pleased with the concept; I've created this game using a variety of skills. Any SPLAT game is perfect for reinforcing important concepts in a large or small group! Check out this *forever Freebie in my store. Let me know if your students LOVE it!

Don't forget to leave honest, helpful feedback.

Apple Turkeys and a SALE!

When I was in second grade I had a wonderful teacher, Francine Porter. She was great for so many reasons. I remember playing a hand clap game that I play with my students now when practicing parts of speech...I remember how she always smelled like hot coco with miniature marshmallows mixed with a dab of coffee....I remember laminated game pieces that attached to a game board with Velcro...I remember going to see Michael Jackson's last concert in Philadelphia the year I was in her class. I remember her red lipstick and Chinese bob haircut...I remember her coming next door to speak with my mom when I acted up in class one day (her parents lived next door to me and I only remember her having to make ONE house visit!!) Best of all, I remember her making apple turkeys with my class for Thanksgiving and I vowed that WHEN I had my own classroom, filled with my own students, I would make apple turkeys (and games with laminated pieces that stuck game boards with Velcro) too! I've been making them ever since : )

You need apples, marshmallows, toothpicks and raisins

Create the apple turkey's frame using toothpicks

Use a large marshmallow for the head and the smaller marshmallow and raisins for the feathers and legs

Let the students become creative!

Apple Turkey!!
The students really enjoyed this activity : )

It's that time again!! Time for a TPT Sale!!

I always look forward to TPT's big sales! It is usually the time when I really get to shop around and find really great resources to use for teaching! I used to think, "why buy it....I can make it!" But I soon came to realize that there was no need to reinvent the wheel and besides....if I can buy it from someone else, I  have more time to focus on things I really like to create! TPT is a gift from Teachers' Heaven!! It is THE best way to cut down on planning time! What I enjoy creating are cool games for differentiation  and small group instruction. When you have great games that engage your students, they get to practice important skills while having fun. I've learned that when teaching in an inclusion classroom, it is important to have a variety of hands-on activities for every skill. This provides reinforcement and it allows students to "feel their way through".....hands-on learning is very beneficial for most students.

Check out all of the games I have in my store and grab them on sale this Monday and Tuesday!! Here are a few of my favorite :)

Are you looking for more games that are purposeful, yet fun for your students? Check out these games below!! By establishing clear and consistent classroom routines for students to work in centers, you can develop an easy to manage system for establishing a "workshop" period in your class during instructional time. Workshop can feel like game time to students; however, they are playing games with a purpose! My store offers a variety of differentiated games for students ranging from a 2nd-5th grade level. Most games include a high, medium and low level of differentiation (great for practicing a variety of skills). Once you teach students to play these games, a workshop period will basically run itself!! Most of my games have similair rules and can easily be taught to your students. All of the SPLAT games are played alike so once students learn how to play one, they can easily play the others.

Easy Street!! Welcome to the END OF THE SCHOOL YEAR : )

I am in official countdown mode!! There are only 16 days of school left and believe me, I CANNOT WAIT to sleep in, file some paper work, clean out my office, travel.....and BLOG!! I first went MIA during the months of January to March because I had to complete my entry for National Board Certification (remember that famous 1 point fiasco....). Then I had some (and I use that word lightly) free time to actually get a few posts up on my blog. Well.....last week my graduate courses began and welp....I'm back to blogging in between teaching, studying, writing papers, conducting research...... Thank goodness for "classroom management"! Why? Because since the start of May my class has been basically running itself. Yes I teach the major subjects in the morning, but the only intense teaching I have to do at this point is my math drill and practice session (this is an intense instructional period where I provide remediation and instruction based on what the students MUST master before leaving fourth grade). I love this period because I kind of said the heck with the text book and I've been teaching all of those things that many of my students needed additional support with. I can honestly say, all of my students are on target!! One way I did this was first drilling important skills and concepts and then providing them with plenty of differentiated games that allowed them to really practice and master important skills. My students struggled the most with multiplication and division. Once I made one game that they could use in class during workshop time to help them with this, I started getting requests!! So what I started doing was....instead of writing long (and boring ) lesson plans, I started creating games based on the skills I felt my students needed the most support with (and wrote short boring lesson plans). Because my students are so involved during our workshop time, my class basically runs itself. I actually float from group to group to monitor their progress, but for the most part my students are in control for about an hour and a half every day. Not only do they run our workshop time, they also manage the behavior chart, post the daily agenda, monitor the pencil cup, take roll, monitor our breakfast period and more....EASY STREET. This is the payoff for being super consistent and extremely OCD through out the school year. Even though waking up is TORTURE, getting through the day is actually pretty easy : )

I posted most of the games that I've been using in my TPT store...Some I haven't gotten around to posting yet (busy busy busy).  I will definitely get those up some time soon. In the meantime, feel free to check out the ones I've uploaded so far. Some are free and some are paid items.
